CASE STUDY: REGENERATION (PRIVATE LED, PARK HILL)

Sheffield used to be a city dependent on heavy industry with the area's natural resources of iron ore, water power and coal. Park Hill is a huge 1960's estate of flats designed to replace the late 19th century slum dwellings that had house factory workers. Originally, the flats were modern, with running water and inside toilets, but 40 years later... they were derelict, run down and rife with crime and poverty.

Decline:

  • Industry went into decline and Sheffield lost industry and jobs.
  • Unemployment, environmental and social problems such as poverty effected the area.
  • Renewal of all the flats was difficult as the council no longer owned all the flats.
  • Renewal of the brownfield industrial sites was difficult as the ground was polluted by the waste from the iron and steel making- massive investment was required…
