CASE STUDY: INNER CITY REDEVELOPMENT (LONDON DOCKLANDS)
Before-
- Sewage, disease, lack of sanitation.
- Housing lacked in basic ameties/slum dwellers and squatters.
- Traditional jobs were lost. Manual/unskilled, reliable but poorly paid.
- Surrounding docks were poor quality housing. Typical old city inner terraced areas.
- During the 19th century, London was the world's biggest port.
- By 1970's became derelict.
- In the 1950's, ships became bigger, and therefore unable to reach London's docklands.
- Few jobs, poor conditions, poor services.
- People forced to move away and look for work/better quality of life.
- London Dockland Development Coorporation set out to improve social, economic and envionmental conditions.
Their ambitions were...
- Improve environmental conditions by reclaiming derelict land, clearing docks to create green space.
- Improve economic conditions creating new jobs and improving transport systems.
- Improve social conditions through new housing, and recreational facilities.
