Geography Case Study 14(Apple)

What does Apple Manufacture?

Apple manufactures electronics such as phones, mp3 players, laptops, computers, watches, software and other peripherals to go along side these items like apple TV or apps.

Where is the head office of Apple and what are the reasons for and impacts of locating there?

Apples head office is Cupertino, California, United States of America. I think that this is here because it is a wealthy area of the country and with a large population in California they can have many employers. It is also located there as Steve Jobs, is from California and wanted it to be close to home. Also as a high percentage of Apple outlets are in America It is more logical to have it closer to the consumer, therefore less shipping costs. Also it is close to respected universities e.g. Stanford for graduate recruitment; close to other similar tech companies (Silicon Valley) and is close to China (if you head west)

Where Apple’s factories and what are the reasons for and impacts of locating there?

There are no actual apple factories however they are run by third parties such as Foxconn which manufactures most of their stuff. They are in multiple countries such as China, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, United States and 4 countries in Europe, then a final assembly one in Ireland, this is there for tax purposes, as then Apple don’t have to pay such a high tax price. Many of these countries are not as developed as the UK or the US; therefore they can have cheaper labour than over here as they
