The collective unconscious and archetypes

  • The human mind can be divided into three parts: the ego/unconscious, which consists of our thoughts, feelings and personality; the personal unconscious, which is made up of our experiences and memories; and the collective unconscious, which is an underlying layer of pre-existent forms that is shared by the whole of humanity
  • Archetypes are the specific reaction patterns that the collective unconscious communicates to us; archetypes arise as a kind of urge or instinct that tries to tell you what to do in a certain situation
  • When the conscious  becomes aware of the archetypal images communicated to it by the archetypes, it makes sense of them by putting them into narrative form, i.e. myths or dreams
