SCHAFFERS STAGES OF ATTACHMENT
- PRE-ATTACHMENT STAGE- only some preference to humans is shown
- INDISCRIMINATE PHASE- will accept comfort from anyone
- DISCRIMINATE- attachment formed with primary care giver
- MULTIPLE ATTACHMENTS- secondary attachments to other adults
SCHAFFER AND EMERSON
- AIM- investigate types of attachment and how they are formed
- METHOD- longitudinal observation, 60 babies (31 M, 29 F), working class from Glasgow, Measured seperation anxiety and stranger anxiety, observed every month for a year and then again at 18 months
- RESULTS- Attachments were formed with the more interactive caregiver, 50% showed seperation anxiety at 6-8 months, At 18 87% had at least two attachment
- EVALUATION- Observed in natural environment so high in mundane realism…
