SCHAFFERS STAGES OF ATTACHMENT 

• PRE-ATTACHMENT STAGE- only some preference to humans is shown
• INDISCRIMINATE PHASE- will accept comfort from anyone
• DISCRIMINATE- attachment formed with primary care giver
• MULTIPLE ATTACHMENTS- secondary attachments to other adults

SCHAFFER AND EMERSON

• AIM- investigate types of attachment and how they are formed
• METHOD- longitudinal observation, 60 babies (31 M, 29 F), working class from Glasgow, Measured seperation anxiety and stranger anxiety, observed every month for a year and then again at 18 months
• RESULTS- Attachments were formed with the more interactive caregiver, 50% showed seperation anxiety at 6-8  months, At 18 87% had at least two attachment
• EVALUATION- Observed in natural environment so high in mundane realism…
