CARBON REDUCTION

Carbon is used to reduce metal oxides when the metal is less reactive than carbon e.g iron

Carbon is a reducing agent- it brings about the reduction of something else(and is itself oxidised)

This occurs in a blast furnace.

The iron that comes out of the blast furnace is -96% Fe and is called cast iron or pig iron. The main impurity is carbon which makes the iron brittle.
