Carbon Dioxide Transport

5% transported in plasma as CO2 - simple diffusion

10% transported as carbamino-haemoglobin - CO2 + amino acids + haemoglobin

85% transported as HCO3- ions:

  • CO2 diffuses into the red blood cell
  • CO2 + H2O -> H2CO3 (carbonic acid) - catalysed by carbonic anhydrase
  • H2CO3 -> H+ + HCO3-
  • HCO3- ions diffuse into plasma makes red blood cell…
