it's an excellent deterrent

removes dangerous people e.g terrorists and serial killers from society, creates a safer place, obviously stops them reoffending

cheaper than keeping criminals in maximum security prisons for life at state's expense

life for life is a fair retribution-human life is most valuable thing a person has, so a murderer should lose theirs
