  • Crude oil is ancient sea life which has formed over millions of years. Overtime, layers of rock create the perfect conditions to make crude oil (high pressure and temp, absence of oxygen)
  • It is a mixture of different carbon compounds called hydrocarbons
  • Hydrocarbons contain only hydrogen and oxygen atoms

Alkanes:

  • Most of the hydrocarbons in crude oil are alkanes; these are saturated hydrocarbons which contain as many hydrogen atoms as possible
  • the general formula is CnH(2n+2)
