- ions are made when atoms gain or loose electrons
- when they do this they gain charged particles called ions
- ions can be single atoms or grouped atoms
- when they ionise they are trying to get a full outer shell
- all atoms in group 1 have 1 electron in the outer shell
- they want to get rid of this electron as they will then have a full outer shell
- when group 1 elements (sodium, potassium etc) lose and electron they form positive ions
- a nearly full shell wants to gain an extra electron
