C4- Ionic Bonding

  • ions are made when atoms gain or loose electrons 
  • when they do this they gain charged particles called ions
  • ions can be single atoms or grouped atoms 
  • when they ionise they are trying to get a full outer shell
  • all atoms in group 1 have 1 electron in the outer shell
  • they want to get rid of this electron as they will then have a full outer shell
  • when group 1 elements (sodium, potassium etc) lose and electron they form positive ions
  • a nearly full shell wants to gain an extra electron 
  • in group 7
