INDICATOR: a dye that changes colour

Universal indicator is a combination of dyes which changes colour depending on whether its above or below a certain PH. 

PH scale:

0- STRONG ACID (red) it is a substance with PH lower than 7. FORMS H+ ions in water, 

14- STRONG ALKALI (purple) a BASE is a substance with a PH greater than 7. An alkali is a base that dissolves in water. alkalis form OH- ions in water. 

NEUTRAL = 7
