hard water

  • water that lathers easily with soap is soft water
  • hard water uses more soap to lather and wash effectively
  • because hard water contains compounds (ca and mg) that react with soap to form scum 
  • scum is an insoluble solid
  • hard water is formed by; water in contact with rocks, compounds of Ca or Mg ions dissolve in the water which react with soap to form scum
  • when heated temporry hard water produces an insoluble solid called scale, which is found in kettles, boilers and pipes- this reduces their efficiency
  • calcium compounds are good for our teeth and bones, they also reduce risk of heart disease
