Copper
Copper is extracted from naturally occurring copper ore by heating it with carbon:
copper oxide + carbon ---> copper + carbon dioxide
2CuO + C ---> 2Cu + CO2
Electrolysis
Electrolysis uses an electric current too break down compounds into simpler substances.
In electrolysis, electricity is passed through a liquid called an electrolyte e.g. copper sulphate solution, to make simpler substances.
