C2 2.5 The properties of polymers

?

Key points and Learning objectives

Do the properties of polymers depend on the monomers we use?

Monomers are small molecules that can be made from crude oil and join together to make much bigger molecules called polymer. The monomers produce a tangled web of very long chain molecules. Monomers affect the properties of the polymers they produce.

Can changing reaction conditions modify the polymers that are made?

Changing reaction conditions can also change the properties of the polymer that is produced.

Low Density/ LD polyethene is made at high pressures with a small part/amount of oxygen. The polymer chains are branched and can not pack closely together.

High Density/ HD polyethene made at 50°c with a catalyst has tightly packed polymer chains.
