- Ionic compounds are neutral. If we know the charge on each ion in a compound we can work out its formula by balancing the charges. Sodium chloride is NaCl (one Na+ ions for every one Cl- ion), but calcium chloridde is CaCl2 (one Ca2+ ion for every two Cl- ions).
