Structure of the atom

Atoms are the smalled particles of an element that can take part in chemical reactions. They are too small to see directly. However, from the results of many experiments to understand their structure, scientists have concluded that each atom contains an ever smaller objects at its centre, called the nucleus. This is about 20,000 times smaller than the atom itself.
