C2-structure and bonding

HideShow resource information

chemical bonding

  • when two or more elements react=compound
  • they join by sharing or transferring electrons to make the structure stable (8 in outer shell)
  • nobel gases have stable electronic structures
  • NON-METAL + NON- METAL= COVALENT
  • in covalent bonding the electrongs are shared
  • METAL + NON-METAL= IONIC
  • the metal atoms loose electrons to form positive ions and the non metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions
  • the oppositely charged ions attract each other forming strong ionic bonds

ionic bonding

  • opposite charges in a giant structure or lattice
  • packed in a regular, neat touching pattern
  • strong electrostatic forces
  • can show the transferring of electrons by a cross and dot diagagram
  • they have to be in square brackets…
