1.1: Atoms

An atom is the smallest part of an element that can still be recognised as that element. There are approximately 100 different types of elements that can be found naturally on Earth. 

A relatively small number of substances are made up of only one type of atom; these are called elements. Elements cannot be broken down chemically into any simpler substance. An atom is the smallest part of an element to exist.

Elements can be very different in properties, with elements such as Oxygen and Nitrogen are Non-metals and both do not easily conduct heat or electricity and both do not reflect light. Other elements are metals, like Silver, Chromium, Copper and gold, all being transitional metals.
