BY5.1 DNA Replication

?

DNA Replication

DNA has 2 major functions:

  • replication in dividing cells
  • carrying information for protein synthesis

Replication:

the copying of DNA

occurs in interphase

chromosomes replicate in dividing cells so that each daughter cell has an exact copy

  • replication of the DNA occurs before cell division (interphase)
  • DNA unwinds by the enzyme DNA helicase
  • hydrogen bonds between the DNA strands break making them separate
  • free nucleotides attach to the exposed bases
