DNA Replication
DNA has 2 major functions:
- replication in dividing cells
- carrying information for protein synthesis
Replication:
the copying of DNA
occurs in interphase
chromosomes replicate in dividing cells so that each daughter cell has an exact copy
- replication of the DNA occurs before cell division (interphase)
- DNA unwinds by the enzyme DNA helicase
- hydrogen bonds between the DNA strands break making them separate
- free nucleotides attach to the exposed bases
