Lay community- Sangha

many of those of have acquired the dhamma-eye choose not to be ordained but to become a lay follower, taking 'refuge' in the triple refuge of the buddha, dhamma and sangha. 

The laity provide the physical needs of the sangha which allows them to 'merit make'. 

Lay men and women are part of the four fold sangha.

They are known as..

laymen- bhikkhu     laywomen- bhikkhuni
