Alliance with Japan 1902

  • GB in relative economic decline - Could not protect their Empire - alliances would aid this situation
  • GB wanted to keep defence costs down
  • GBs navy was over stretched
  • The Boer War highlighted weakness in GB's army and decline in GB - staying out of alliances was not advisable
  • Foreign Secretary Sailsbury replaced by Lansdowne - he was more in favour of alliances
  • Japan would help to keep a check on Russia - threat to India
  • Japan had war ships in the Far East - GB could move her ships elsewhere
  • Combined forces of GB and Japan would be more of a threat to Russia
