·        India was granted independence in ’47 under Attlee’s gov

·        Throughout the 50s countries in the empire  had independence movements= hard to ignore

·        Hard to resist independence movements on moral grounds

·        We had fought ww2 on the back of the ideas of freedom and independence= hypocritical not to allow imperial possessions to have their own freedom
