• After German defeat of France -22^nd June 1940, Hitler wanted to invade Britain, entitled ‘Operation Sealion’. This was because although Hitler did not want war with Britain (his main aim was to defeat the Soviet Union and build an Empire in the East), Winston Churchill had made clear that Britain would not make a deal with Germany. Hitler knew the German navy was not as powerful as the British navy and so it was decided to attack Britain from the air using the German Luftwaffe. The plan was to destroy the RAF and then bomb British naval dockyards so a German naval invasion of Britain could take place.
