- a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring
Elephant example
- traditionally though one species in africa (Loxodonta africana) and one in asia (Elephas maximus)
- forest elephants are smaller then L. africana, have longer, thinner mandile, straighter tusks, and 5 front toenails and 4 rear toenails (L. africana has 4 front and 3 rear)
- forest elephants are different species and Roca et al. suggest name them Loxodonta cyclotis
