Bowlby's Theory of Attachment

  • Attachment = Strong & reciprocal bond between infant & caregiver.
  • Attachment behaviours = proximity seeking, seperation distress & general orientation toward specific individual.
  • Maternal Deprivation Hypothesis = The focus is on  continuous relationship with infant & caregiver - an interruption of the relationship can lead to instability. Development of this relationship must occur during "critical period" (first 12 months). If relationship is disrupted during first 2 1/2 yearsthe child can become emotionally disturbed & cognitive development may be
