Blood Glucose Regulation
Blood glucose varies due to -
- Rate of respiration (aerobic)
- cells using glucose
- Carbohydrate intake (diet)
- digestion producing glucose
High Blood Glucose:
- High blood glucose is detected by beta cells of pancreas
- Insulin released from beta cells
- Insulin binds to receptor proteins on target cells (e.g. liver cells)
- Causes an increase in number of glucose carriers on cell surface membrane
- Allows increased facilitated diffusion of glucose into cells
