  • High blood glucose is detected by beta cells of pancreas
  • Insulin released from beta cells
  • Insulin binds to receptor proteins on target cells (e.g. liver cells)
  • Causes an increase in number of glucose carriers on cell surface membrane
  • Allows increased facilitated diffusion of glucose into cells
