Blood glucose varies due to -

• Rate of respiration (aerobic)
  • cells using glucose
• Carbohydrate intake (diet)
  • digestion producing glucose

High Blood Glucose:

• High blood glucose is detected by beta cells of pancreas
• Insulin released from beta cells
• Insulin binds to receptor proteins on target cells (e.g. liver cells)
• Causes an increase in number of glucose carriers on cell surface membrane
• Allows increased facilitated diffusion of glucose into cells
