ROLE OF THE ARMY:
- the German army was essentially Prussian
- was the largest out of the other four armies
- Prussian/German generals had a large influence on government policy
- officers had personal loyalties with the Kaiser not the state
- the system of conscription had men in the army for 2-3 years and they build on values such as discipline, pride and love of the fatherland
- the highest virtues was the army
- uniforms encouraged respect and obedience so Bismarck and the Kaiser both wore their uniforms in public
