ROLE OF THE ARMY:

  • the German army was essentially Prussian
  • was the largest out of the other four armies
  • Prussian/German generals had a large influence on government policy
  • officers had personal loyalties with the Kaiser not the state
  • the system of conscription had men in the army for 2-3 years and they build on values such as discipline, pride and love of the fatherland
  • the highest virtues was the army
  • uniforms encouraged respect and obedience so Bismarck and the Kaiser both wore their uniforms in public
