THE LIBERAL ERA 1871-9:
- after 1871, Bismarck needed a parliamentary majority
- although he was far from being a liberal, he had no choice but to join the National Liberals
- they were the strongest party in the Reichstag
- in some ways the Liberals were the ideal allies because some even applauded the way Bismarck united Germany
- they were more than happy to nationally unite the country
