Biology unit 1

HideShow resource information

In unicellular organisms, organelles are specific and carry out well definied essential functions. An example of a unicellular organism is paramecium. This organism has: a contractile vacuole, a nucleus, a ciliated feeding tube, a food vacuole, and an anal pore. Examples of specialised cells are: neurones and phloem.

Animal cells                Function

  • membrane                       controls entrances and exits of substances
  • smooth er                         makes fats and hormones
  • lysosomes                        contain proteins that break down waste or infection
  • rough er                            site of protein production and folding
  • ribosomes
  • cytoplasm                         site of chemical reactions
  • mitochondria                    site of respiration
