The Heart

The heart is the main organ in the body's circulatory system. The systems function is to get food and oxygen to every cell in the body, and carry waste products like carbon dioxide and urea to where they can be removed from the body.

  • Humans have a double circulatory system - two circuits joined together.
  • The first circuit pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen. This blood then returns to the heart.
  • The second pumps oxygenated blood around all the ograns of the body. The oxygen diffuses into the cells and the now deoxygenated blood is returned to the heart to be pumped out to the lungs again.
