Resting potential
The resting potential is the potential difference of the cell membrane when an impulse is not travelling down it.
It is set up by protein pumps in the phospholipid bilayer of the axon membrane. These transport K+ and Na+ ions inside and outside of the cell. For every cycle 3Na+ are pumped outside and 2K+ are transported inside.
