Biology 2.2 Carbohydrates - Monosaccharides

HideShow resource information

Carbohydrates - carbon molecules (carbo) combined with water (hydrate).

Life based on carbon

Carbon atoms readily form bonds with other carbon atoms.

Allows a sequence of carbon atoms of various lengths to be built, form a backbone with other atoms attached.

Life is based on carbon and a small number of other chemical elements.

The making of large molecules

Monomer = individual molecule that make up chains of molecules together.

Polymer = longer chain of molecules (monomers)

Biological molecules e.g. carbohydrates and proteins are ofter polymers.

Most made up of just carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen.
