Innate - non specific:

  • not specific for a particular antigen
  • no memory
  • effective against many different microbes
  • instantaneous
  • occurs outside the cell

Comprised of:

  • physical barriers - skin, mucosal membranes, tears
  • phagocytic cells - if physical barriers penetrated then neutrophils engulf them
