Types of Nutrients

1. Carbohydrates- 

Made from single sugars or chains of sugars (glucose). They are used in cellular respiration to provide energy to cells. Can be found in potatoes, rice, pasta, bread etc.

2. Lipids (Oils and Fats)

Used as long-term a long term energy store (it is much easier to store than carbohydrates). They also have a role in protection and insulation. They are broken down into glycerol and fatty acids. Can be found in fatty foods.

3. Proteins

Proteins are used for growth and repair. They are broken down into amino acids. Amino acids are absorbed by the body and then assembles into new proteins. Can be found in meat, fish, cheese, milk and eggs.

4. Dietary Fibers

Dietary fibers regulate bowel movement. Sloughs off old lining of intestine. Can be found in vegetables, fruit, whole meal bread. Lack of fibers results in constipation and if the deficiency is long-term, bowel cancer.

5. Water

Water is essential as a solvent for chemical reactions (e.g. cytoplasm), to help thermoregulate (heat loss) (e.g. transpiration) and it is a solvent for transportation of nutrients and…
