Proteins, Catylists and Enzymes

  • Enzymes have a specifc shape to only fit with its substrate (part it needs to connect with)
  • - The substrate binds to the active site

Once the substrate is bound the the active site of the enzyme it can be:

  • - broken down
  • - built up into a larger molocule
  • - changed into another substance
  • Enzymes are made of protein
  • The enzyme does not react with the substrate. It speeds up the reaction (- substrate being the reactant

The conditions the effect enymes are:

  • - temperature (really cold/really hot) e.g. will denature above 40 degrees and work slower at lower temperatures (under 20 degrees)
  • -pH (acids and bases…
