Most carbohyrates are polymers and are made of the same three chemical elements- Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O). The monomers that make up crabohydtres are called monosaccharides (glucose and ribose)
Glucose:
Glucose is a monosaccharide with 6 carbon atoms (hexose monosaccharide). It has two forms Alpha glucose and Beata gluscose (As shown below )
Ribose:
Ribsoe is a monosaccharide with 5 carbon atoms (pentose monosaccharide). It's structire is shown below-
Formation of polysaccharide:
Monosaccharides are joined together by glycosidic bonds using a condensation reaction (where a watre molecule is relased) A hydrolysis reaction is used to break this glycosidic bond (where a water molecule is released)
