Following either self- of cross- pollination, double fertilisation occurs.
Fertilisation - the fusion of a male and female gamete to produce a zygote.
- A mature pollen grain lands on a mature stigma and germinates in the sucrose solution secreted by the stigma, producing a pollen tube.
- Only one pollen grain will successfully germinate: the others disintegrate.
- The pollen tube grows out of the pollen grain and down the style, up a gradient of chemoattractants.
