Biological Treatments for Abnormality

There are two biological treatments and these are drugs and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Only if drugs fail or take little effect, should ECT be used. There are two different types of drugs: antidepressants and antipsychotic. Anti-depressant drugs such as Monoanime-Oxidase Inhibitors influence the serotonin neurotransmitter. MAOI's block the action of an enzyme that breaks down serotonin, increases avaliability in the nervous system. This improves the sufferers mood as it increases avaliability of neurotransmitters. Antipsychotic drugs such as Phenothiazines are used to trat schizophrenia by blocking the D2 receptor for dopamine, there is now less dopamine. They influence it by calming and making the sufferers symptoms less severe, this reduces hallucinations and delusions.
