Biological: the role of biological factors in gender development

We all inherit 23 pairs of chromosomes from each parent. 22 of the 23 pairs determine physical appearance such as hair colour, eye colour and height, but the final pair determines gender.

In females, the final pair of chromosomes is XX, where the foetus inherits and X chromosome from each parent. In males, the final pair of chromosomes is XY, where the foetus inherits an X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father. A Y chromosome must be present for a foetus to develop into a male.
