Serotonin - Changes in the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin appear to be a characteristic of induviduals with eating disorders. Bailer et al compared the levels of serotonin in two types of women wih anorexia with healthy controls. The binging/purging type and the restricting type. (They were recovering women.) They found significantly higher serotonin activity in tewomen recovering from the binging/purging type. In addition they found the highest levels of serotonin activity in women who showed the most anxiety, suggesting that persistant disruption of serotonin may lead to increased anxiety, which may trigger AN.
