Biological Approach to treating mental illnesses

It is a treatment that changes something biologically to alleviate or stop symptoms. This can be temporary or permenant.

Treatment includes:

  • Chemotherapy which is temporary as it is a course of drugs that you need to take.
  • ECT this is temporary but the side affects can be permenant.
  • Psychosurgery this is permenant as you are removing parts of the brain.

Chemotherapy 

This is the treatment of any ailment with chemicals. 

In the case of mental health mental health these treatments include:

  • Antidepressants
  • Antipsychotics
  • Mood stabilisers - for example lithium

Antidepressants

These are used for depression, anxiety and phobias.

This type of chemotherapy works by boosting or prolonging the activity of a particular brain chemical.
