Diathesis-stress model suggests certain individuals are at a predispositional vulnerability to developing OCD due to inherited genes. (check) A traumatic experience can act as the trigger to these genes becoming activated, leading to OCD.

Nestadt et al (2010) conducted a meta-analysis of twin studies into OCD. It was discovered that 68% of monozygotic twins and 31% of dizygotic twins experience OCD - this high concordance rate suggests OCD has a very strong genetic component.
