Module 4

Disease is a condition that impairs the normal functioning of an organsim. Pathogens are organisms that cause disease. Bacteria, viruses, fungi and protoctists are types of pathogens.

communicable diseases- diseases that spread betwenn organisms;

Tuberculosis(TB): affects animals, Bacterium                                                                       Bacterial meningitis: affects humans, Bacterium                                                                   Ring Rot: affects potatoes and tomatoes, Bacterium                                                             HIV/AIDS: affects humans, Virus                                                                                     Influenza: affects animals, Virus                                                                                           Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV): affects plants, Virus                                                                 Black sigatoka: affects banana palnts, Fungus                                                                       Ringworm: affects cattle, Fungus                                                                                         Athlete's foot: affects humans, Fungus                                                                                 Potato/tomato late blight: affects potatoes and tomatoes, Protoctist                                       Malaria: affects anmals, protoctist

Direct transmission- disease transmitted directly from one organisms to another. This can happen via doplet infection (spores), sexual intercourse or touching an ifected oragnism.

Indirect transmission- disease is transmitted via an intermediate, this inculdes air, water, food or another organsim (vector)

Factors affecting transmission;

living conditions- overcrowding and increase transmission, eg…
