Nutrient become part of your body - broken down into smaller pieces then rebuilt to form the different parts of the organism
Used to provide energy needed to drive metabolism

Substances that cannot be digested or take part in metabolic processes are removed from the body

Nutrients required
Carbohydrates - energy storage and supply and structure
Proteins - structure, transport, anzymes, antibodies and most hormones
Lipids - Membranes, energy supply, thermal insulation, protective layers/padding, electrical insulation in neurones and some hormones
Vitamins and Minerals - form pasrts of some larger molecules - take part in some metabolic reactions - some act as coenzymes or anzyme activators
