Bill to Law Process

First Reading

  • Formal procedure and introduction of Bill to Parliament
  • Bill's name and main aims are read out. MP's read the Bill for the first time

Second Reading

  • Usually 2 weeks after the 1st reading
  • Bill is first debated, speaker controls the debate
  • Vote taken to see if Bill goes to the next stage

Committee Stage

  • About a small group of 18 MP's discuss the Bill, a select committee
  • Each part of the Bill dicussed and there are suggested ammendments
  • Whole house
