Structure of Benzene (Delocalised Model):

  • The pi bonds are formed by the overlap of adjacent p-orbitals above and below the ring
  • The resulting pi bonds are delocalised forming an electron cloud above and below the ring
  • The delocalised structure has extra stability so the pi bonds are harder to break than a normal carbon-carbon double bond
  • The six carbon-carbon bonds are intermediate in length between a single C-C bond and a double
