Two questionnaires were handed out to 113 participants who were attending a British health centre. The questionnaires were distributed in a random order. 

  • Group 1: completed questionnaire 1 and comprised of 34 females and 30 males. The mean age being 35.5 years.
  • Group 2: completed questionnaire 2 and comprised of 25 females and 24 males. The mean age being 34.1 years 

The questionnaires included 29 harmless animals and insects, as it was argued the same perceptual characteristics that create fear in harmful animals should create fear in harmless ones also. Despite them having no biological significance to the
