Plains Indians believed that everything in nature had a spirit. These spirits would sometimes help humans. The Plains Indians believed that humans were a part of nature and should work with the spirits of nature rather than trying to tame nature to obey them. These beliefs led to many Indians being named after nature and their natural surroundings eg. Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse etc.

Plains Indians believed they could contact the spirit world through 'vision quests', guided by spirit animals, like spirit hawks or spirit foxes. Plains Indians also danced special ritual dances, like the sun dance, to enter the spirit world. It was also ossible to work with spirits to charge up magic items, which Plains Indians would wear
