Maternal Deprivation

Can be caused by extended seperations, but is distinct from this in that it is a lack of an essential aspect of caregiving.

Bawlby believed that if prolonged seperation from the mother and her emotional care took place in the critical period of 30 months, it will definitely suffer psychological consequences.

Consequences such as:

  • Intellectual development is impaired. This means the child will suffer with an abnormallty low IQ, mental retardation. This has been demonstrated in studies, one of which found that children who were fostered (thus recieving better emotional support) had a higher average IQ than those who remained in care.
  • Emotional Development is also affected. Bawlby identified affectionless psychopathy as the inabillity to emphasise or feel guilt, preventing normal relationships and encouraging criminal behaviour.
