420km of coastline.

142 million population.

40% population below poverty line.

Causes of 2007 flood -

Human causes: deforestation in Himalayas, extensive farming meaning more surface run off, building embankments to prevent flooding has increased siltation and made the channel smaller.

Snow melt in Himalayas has contributed to the flood as well as regular cyclones and monsoons bringing heavy rain.

Social impacts - over 2000 people died as many were reluctant to evacuate as had to leave land and…
